Pontiac Grand AM No Start And Has No Codes!

ignition_switch Pontiac Grand AM no start question:

This Pontiac Grand AM no start I have on this car happens always in the morning. Sometimes, if you crank it long enough, it will start. The engine model is 2000 and has a 2.4L engine. For my initial test, I verified the ignition spark and it seems to loose spark and will quit after a few cranks. There is no codes or any light flashing in the dash after using my OBD2 engine scanner. Anyways, I changed both the crank sensor and the ignition module but it seems I am back to square one: no starting in the morning or when engine is cold. I suspect it is the engine computer but I am not sure, do you have any suggestion?

Pontiac Grand AM no start ATS Fix:

For Pontiac Grand AM no start problem, I would not touch the computer initially. If after changing the crank sensor and ignition module and the engine still won’t start, I would check the harness wires coming from your ignition switch by your steering column. The switch itself is known to do this based on your symptoms and checking the harness wires would verify that. You can also try wiggling those harness wires and if suddenly the engine starts, you know the ignition switch is bad.

For a vehicle this old, it is reported on ATS common fixes database that the ignition switches for this vehicle is worn and known to have poor loose wiring terminal contacts. You can verify that by removing the switch and it can be done without removing the steering wheel. You just need to remove the mounting bolts holding the steering column to the dash and you will have plenty of room to remove the ignition switch located on the side of the steering column under the steering wheel. For maintenance purposes, you can replace this ignition switch which is available from any local parts store.

ATS TIPS:

Before disconnecting any wires for the steering column, make sure to disconnect the battery terminals. This can prevent accidental shorting of any live wires that could damage your computer.

Finally, if the above fix cannot solve this problem, ask for the engine computer wiring diagram so you can check all the ground connections before replacing it. If you have more Pontiac Grand Am no start question, please leave it on the comment box below.
