Caravan Check Engine Light…A Coolant Code!

engine_thermostat Caravan check engine light question:

My Caravan check engine light occurred after starting problem which always takes so long and sometimes caused the engine no start. When tried to scan for the fault codes, I got code P1282 coolant fault. I believe this has something to do with my coolant sensor being defective? How do I check it? This Caravan is a 1997 model and has a 3.0L engine.

Caravan check engine light ATS Fix:

Regarding this Caravan check engine light code for the coolant, this code actually pertains to your thermostat which could be stuck open. When this happens, this would make your engine computer to think that the engine coolant temperature is always cold. This event will cause the injectors to inject more fuel causing the engine to be flooded during start ups. What you can do is to remove the thermostat and visually check the condition of the thermostat. If stuck open, you will see the spring of the thermostat stretched and you will need to replace the whole thermostat assembly. After you are done you can reset the fault code before doing a road test to see if the code returns. However, most of the time, this code is fixed by simply replacing the thermostat.

ATS Tips:

You can get a step by step instructions on how to locate and replace the engine thermostat by having an online mechanic help you do this. This can prevent not only replacing unnecessary parts but help you do it right the FIRST TIME!

Make sure to use the recommended coolant mix for your engine. If your engine has too many miles, this is the right time to flush the cooling system before replacing the coolant fluid. ATS provides the correct specifications for the coolant capacity and instructions so you can bleed the air from your cooling system.
