This 2005 Chevy Malibu Code was asked after the owner saw a check engine light showing on his dash panel. A lean fuel code came up after seeing Auto Zone parts store. The engine size is 2.2 L and and he cannot even find the spark plug wires so he can do a tune up. This vehicle seems to use a lot of gas lately.
Diagnostics for 2005 Chevy Malibu Code:
To change the spark plugs on this, the top engine cover must be removed. When the cover is lifted it will show the 4 coil plugs (combination of ignition coil and spark plug). The spark plugs were separated from the coil and replaced. Cover was cleaned and put back and engine started to check for possible vacuum leak. No vacuum leak was found and the dash panel light stayed on.
Cleaned the 5 wire mass sensor located at the air intake ducting including the replacement of the air filter element. The code remained after doing all of these. The upstream oxygen sensor was probed with a scanner using the freeze frame data lines. Manually leaned the fuel mixture and sprayed carb cleaner to make it rich; it showed the sensor signal voltage was working normally.
Checked the fuel pressure while the engine was running and the rated idling pressures indicated 57 psi. No changed on fuel pressure when engine was revved up. Checking the fuel regulator, it did not seem to leak. Checked the vehicle service bulletin and it called for engine computer reflashing by the dealer. Took the car to the dealer and it was fixed.
Solution for 2005 Chevy Malibu Code:
Although this could have been fixed quicker using the service bulletin, the owner opted to do all of these because he has not service it since he bought the car 2 years ago.
Please refrain from doing this on your own unless assisted by an online licensed mechanic to avoid damage to the engine control modules. Feel free to leave your comments below if you have a 2005 Chevy Malibu Code problem.
