Repair of Power Window Problems With No Code Reader

door jamb The repair of power window problems with no code reader is not difficult if you know how the power window circuit works. I am talking about power window common problems which might be a combination of window not going up or down, stuck in one mode or no movement at all. On newer vehicles, the power window are updated with advanced features like automatic express-down or up window switch control. This makes the window move faster down or up without holding the switch button; a slight tap to the button will do. A fail safe device was also added so that power windows will prevent from moving up continuously. Using the auto reverse function, it prevents accident from small kids being choked by the rear windows .

All of these improvements are controlled by body computers or modules to operate which need specialize tools like programmable code scanner used by the dealer. When faced with window problems and you happened to have no access to window codes and scanner tools, here are some basic repair of power window problems with no code reader strategies:

1.) Check the power window fuses: if any window circuit is shorted, it will blow the fuse.

2.) Begin by playing the master switch button which controls all the windows from a common location in the driver side.

3.) Using this same switch, compare the operation of all the windows by observing the motions of each window. This will guide you if any power window motor is noisy (worn motor windings) or has dirty frame guide called regulators.

4.) Since this driver master switch is used all the times, check the condition of the button for looseness or movement. If stuck, this calls for removal of the master switch for closer inspection. Using the vehicle’s wiring diagram, you can actually diagnose the whole window circuit by checking all the wires coming and going from it. This will also save you time because you can check the window motor integrity without removing the window panel. Example: using a digital voltmeter, you can check the voltage drop and resistance from the switch to the power window motor. By wiggling the wires at the door jamb, any shorted or open wire can be analyzed without using complicated tools.

5.) As an added technique, peel back the rubber boot on the wiring harness that runs from the door hinge jamb to the door body. If you wiggle these wires while playing the master switch buttons, you might find the wires that are broken with few strands left. Most technicians always check these wires at the door jamb if the master switch is not working properly.

6.) It is only after you tested that the door jamb wires and master switch are OK that you consider removing the whole door panel. This task of removing the door panel is difficult and you must have the right service manual or information to service it. This way, you can check the window motor properly by providing the voltage supply and ground to the motor. You can also service the window regulator and look for cracked linkage connection, gathering of dirt in the glass sliders and loose mountings which normally drop at the bottom of the door housing.

7.) Once you verified that that both motor and regulator are alright, then you can consider replacing the master switch.

Quick savings for the repair of power window problems with no code reader:

  • you can buy the window motor or complete window regulator from a salvage yard at a fraction of the dealer cost
  • If you have to replace a window master switch, put a new one using OEM part
  • always disconnect the battery connections if the power window circuit has a computer or working with any electrical device
  • reset the code by seeing your nearest parts store like Auto Zone if you do not have a code reader. This assumes that the window computer is OK and has not been touched. On some window circuits, the new body computer or module has to be re-programmed by the dealer in order to work
  • Doing the repair of power window problems with no code reader can be a little challenge but doable with this correct information.
