Power Window Switch for Jeep on Models Before 2007

Jeep window switch The power window switch for Jeep is a misnomer because although it is somewhat a master switch from the driver side, actually it is not. When you compare it to GM and Ford window master switches, it has limited functionality. Instead of the window module included in the circuit, it is separated from the switch. When you physically look for the window module, it is wired independently and incase in a box housing inside the door panel.

There is also an express auto down and up motor which is totally different: instead of putting the express circuit inside the window switch, the circuit is installed inside the driver side motor itself. If you ask me, I like this design because it less complicated. In both GM and Ford vehicles, the switch itself has the computer signals but on Jeeps or most Chrysler products, it acts just an on and off toggle switch. In short, there is no body control module to control it directly. This means, the power window for Jeep is easy and cheaper to repair.

Tracing the power window switch for Jeep, power is supplied from the fuse box. The switch itself gets its ground externally from a wire connected to the vehicle frame. The same set up is also used for the window module which activates the express window motor. As a matter fact, both the power window switch and motor share a common ground. Both driver and passenger side window switches for the front doors are wired and installed in the same way.

When troubleshooting power window switch for Jeep on high end vehicles:

Play all the window switch buttons and check if the window motors can be activated from the driver side. Since there are no other complicated circuits involved, all window operations can be analyzed and compared on this end. If all 3 windows are working and driver side is not, it is safe to say either one the driver window components are at fault: express motor; window module or the switch. Each of this can be tested individually when the door panel is out. Don’t forget the power supply wires to the driver switch located at the door jamb which could be an open circuit or shorted.

Note: If you notice while pushing the driver window button either up and down and it could suddenly stop. There is a possibility that the window mechanical regulator where the window slides are dirty. While the door panel is out, you can clean those sliders grove to ease up the window motor load.

Using a low impedance test light, you can check both power and ground integrity at these 3 component terminals. Because the window module and switch are separated in different housing, you can actually swap the window modules of the front door. To save time, you can just replace it since it does not need programming such as those of GM window master switch. Just don’t forget to use a wiring diagram for the power window circuit before undertaking this job.

TIPS on power window switch for Jeep on models before 2007:

1.) Anytime you see the word module on any window circuit, always use a scanner to get the code and do this first.
2.) If you notice while pushing the driver window button either up and down and it could suddenly stop. If it does, it is possible that the window mechanical regulator where the window slides are dirty. While the door panel is out, you can clean those sliders grove to ease up the window motor load.
3.) The above circuit description and tests applies to 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokees.
