Extreme Check Engine Light Codes

Code P1282 coolant fault for 1997 Dodge Caravan with 3.0L engine

Question:

My 97 Dodge Caravan has a problem on starting which always takes so long and sometimes no start. When I scanned for codes, I got P1282 coolant fault. I believe this has something to do with my coolant sensor being defective? How do I check it?

ATS Adviser:

That code actually pertains to your thermostat which could be stuck open. This would make your computer to think that the engine is always cold causing it to be flooded during start ups. What you can do is to remove the thermostat and visually check the condition of the thermostat. If stuck open, replace it and reset the code before doing a road test to see if the code returns. However, most of this problem is fixed by replacing the thermostat.
